Making UNFOLLOW — Why We Built an Entire Fake Social Network
July 2026 · Dev Notes
Detective games have an old dilemma. Put a shiny marker on every clue and the game gets easy — but the "feeling of actually deducing" disappears. Mark nothing at all, and the player just gets lost. UNFOLLOW is my answer to that dilemma: don't hide the clues — instead, make the very sense of "knowing where to look" into the game itself.
SNSThe Whole Screen Is a Social Network
UNFOLLOW's game screen is, quite literally, a social network. There's a feed, there are profiles, a follower list, and a search bar. You read a vanished vlogger's final posts, notice a subtly off-key tone in the comments, and spot the odd detail in the background of a tagged photo — I took the behavioral grammar of the lurking and snooping we actually do on social media and turned it, unchanged, into the tools of detective work. There's no control scheme to learn. If you've ever used a social network, you already know how to play this game.
The Search Bar Is Your Most Powerful Weapon
In this game, search is not decoration. Search a name that a post mentions in passing and an account that wasn't in your feed appears — and a decisive clue turns up in that account's old posts. Some accounts are locked; you have to deduce the password from information that leaked somewhere in other posts. A pet's name, an anniversary, a favorite song — exactly the way people actually make their passwords. I designed it so that the moment you think "should I try searching this?" is precisely the moment the investigation moves forward.
You Don't Pick the Answer — You Type It
Multiple-choice mysteries get cracked by process of elimination. So at every important moment, UNFOLLOW makes you type the answer yourself. Not "which post contains a contradiction?" but "why is this person's alibi a lie?" — answered in your own words. And at the very end, you hand-pick 3 pieces of decisive evidence from everything you've gathered and go public. Even if you've named the right culprit, public opinion turns its back on you if your combination of evidence is weak. That's why every case has four endings — because knowing the truth and proving it are two different things.
A Safety Net for Stuck Players
As hardcore as the structure is, it needed a safety net too. DMs with your client fill that role. If you're stuck for a while, the client sends a hint — first just a direction, then something a little more specific. Because receiving a hint is just a natural part of the conversation, there's none of the "I had to look up a walkthrough" sense of defeat. A single case runs 20–30 minutes, the full trilogy is 60–90 minutes, and your progress saves automatically.
About the Third Case
Without spoilers, I'll say just one thing: the very act of "exposing" that you carried out in Parts 1 and 2 becomes the subject of Part 3. Where is the line between righteous whistleblowing and a witch hunt? That's the story I most wanted to tell in making this game.
